Triple Crown Mixed League 2013 Auction Results

At $33, Brad Pinkerton of the Sporting News made Clayton Kershaw the highest paid pitcher in the 2013 Triple Crown Mixed league auction.

This is a standard 5×5 Rotisserie league, set up with two catchers, so it matches the traditional 12-team mixed league format. We run FAAB at 11 am on Saturdays so you can see the results to prepare for your own Sunday night FAAB.

Here is the link to the page that shows the draft results by team in order of selection. It’s open to the public all year, so you can check standings, line-ups, and free agent pick-ups all season long:

And at the bottom of this article you’ll see team rosters with the players ordered by position.

In a one-catcher league, I would definitely either wait late in a snake draft or just spend $1 at the end of an auction. Even in two-catcher mixed leagues, I don’t think it’s important to wast an early pick or big money on the catcher position. I feel that the only stat worthy of “chasing” here is batting average. Therefore, I put out a $15 bid and was happy to win Joe Mauer at that price. I waited and waited and saved my money, but perhaps I waited a bit too long, and I ended up with extra. Salvador Perez, basically a mini-Mauer, was the best place to put the money at that point and the last above average catcher available, so I laid out $12 for him. He and Mauer together give me a huge advantage in the batting average category at the catcher position, allowing me to use lower-BA players elsewhere for cheap speed or power if need be.

In a mixed league, there’s plenty of cheap power late, so early on, like at catcher, it’s batting average that you pay for. However, I don’t want to spend over $20 for any one player. That meant that Billy Butler $21 and Martin Prado $17 were perfect targets for me. Prado doesn’t have the power, but he’ll give me the BA anchor. I added Justin Morneau $5 and Adam LaRoche $8 later on. There were many decent corners available cheap towards the end of the auction. It’s a very deep position.

I like 15-15 types for my starting 2B & SS for $10-15 each and then perhaps a slap-hitting speedster at MI for under $10. I ended up with Jimmy Rollins $14, Danny Espinosa $9, Howie Kendrick $9, and Everth Cabrera $2 on the bench. I can live with that. Cabrera for $2 is such cheap speed! After the top middle infielders are off the board, if you are patient, you can get reasonable deals at the position.

I like getting one .300-25-100 anchor in the outfield, and Matt Holliday $21 fit the bill for me in this league. I like to follow with a couple 20-20 types, and I found Alex Rios $17 and Dexter Fowler $4 to be agreeable options for me. I added Adam Eaton $8 for more speed, Josh Willingham $12 late for more power, and Drew Stubbs $1 as a back-up for everything but BA. It feels like a solid, well-balanced outfield to me.

I like having two very solid $15-20 aces. Jared Weaver $19 and Zach Greinke $13 work for me in that sense here. I supported them with Jake Peavy $9, Ian Kennedy $6, Jonathon Niese $5, Matt Garza $2, and Ryan Vogelsong $3. I prefer NL pitchers to AL pitchers in mixed leagues, and I have five NL and two AL here, so mission accomplished in that regard. It appears that in a league like this you can definitely just pick a couple of aces at the end of the second tier and then wait a while for the $5-9 cheapies, and then again for the $2-3 pitchers. I’m happy with my starters.

I was targeting closers in the $7-11 rangr but went the extra buck on Rafael Soriano $12 coming over to the Nationals. I backed him with Glen Perkins $7, Joel Hanrahan $8, and Jonathan Broxton $5 (right before it was announced that Chapman was moving back to the bullpen). I’ll still take those top three. My advice would be to definitely wait on closers past the top tier. There’s no need to spend $15 for Motte when you can have Hanrahan and Perkins combined for $15.

This is one of my favorite teams this year. I think the balance is there across the board. I spent just enough on my studs to leave plenty for many $5-9 picks later. My risk (and steals and saves) is spread well, and I have a good mix of solid vets plus some youth with upside.
