Triple Crown American League 2013 Auction Results

Justin Verlander was rostered by Keith Hernandez of KFFL for $32, which isn’t a bad price, considering the fact that Tiger teammate Max Scherzer went for $29 later in the auction!

This AL-only league functions much like the Tout Wars and LABR fantasy baseball industry leagues. It’s a standard 5×5 Rotisserie league (though Tout now uses OBP instead of our traditional AVG). We run FAAB at 11 am on Saturdays so you can see the results to prepare for your own Sunday night FAAB.

Here is the link to the page that shows the draft results by team in order of selection. It’s open to the public all year, so you can check standings, line-ups, and free agent pick-ups all season long:

And at the bottom of this article you’ll see team rosters with the players ordered by position.

CATCHERS

After looking at the AL player pool overall, one thing jumped out at me–batting average! Not only can you really dig yourself into a huge hole if you are not careful with the category during the draft, but you can totally ruin it with so many players later in the draft (J.P. Arencibia, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Chris Iannetta, to name a few catchers). My main plan was to draft Joe Mauer and Victor Martinez for about $20 each and really help my batting average so I could afford someone like Adam Dunn or Mark Reynolds later if I wanted cheap power at the expense of batting average. I was thrilled to get Mauer at 21. I didn’t want to go $22 on V-Mart, so I waited past the $18 Salvador Perez, $17 Mike Napoli, and $13 A.J. Pierzynski to snag a nice $11 Ryan Doumit. I love catchers that don’t catch all the time. I was very happy with my pair for a total of $32.

CORNER INFIELD

My plan was to pay $40 for Miguel Cabrera, but he went to far past that, so I had to make alternate plans. I was honestly price-enforcing Edwin Encarnacion, but $27 for 35-40 home runs and good supporting numbers is certainly reasonable. The only thing is that 1B is DEEP in the AL and 3B is a complete disaster. My overall plan was to just get Miggy and not worry about 3B. I didn’t want to invest $30+ in Adrian Beltre or Evan Longoria. Then I thought about paying near $20 for youngsters like Will Middlebrooks and Manny Machado, and I balked at that, too. Every single third baseman was overpriced. I ended up with Kevin Youkilis for $15. I have to pray he has this one last year of production in him. I felt that Mark Tiexiera would earn his $13 upon his return from injury, and I can slide $3 Wilson Betemit into the corner spot to cover until then. I liked Mitch Moreland $9, Chris Parmelee $2, and Josh Donaldson $2 as late corner infield picks.

MIDDLE INFIELD

All I was interested in here was decent across-the board production for $15 or less at 2B and SS, and I feel that $15 Alexei Ramirez and $12 Gordan Beckham provide that. With speed from Alejandro De Aza and Coco Crisp in the outfield for just $15 each (instead of the more expensive Elvis Andrus or Jose Altuve for $22 each), I went with power (well, RBI) potential in Beckham. I grabbed Sean Rodriguez for $1 at the MI position but will scour the wire all year for an upgrade

OUTFIELD

Usually outfield is pretty scarce in mono leagues. It’s much less so in the AL because of the DH and also some fourth outfielders with speed. My lesson learned in this draft was that speed is cheaper than power. Even with Encarnacion, I feel light on power, unfortunately. I was happy with De Aza and Crisp for $15 each. I then bid too much on David Murphy for $14 and then Lorenzo Cain for $13. They were not bad picks, but I was set in AVG and SB at that point. I needed 20-HR power more. Players like Matt Joyce $7 and Raul Ibanez $2 were available later. I probably should have paid $20 for Nelson Cruz or $19 for Nick Swisher and combined them with a cheaper power source over Murphy and Cain. I did like my late picks of Jarrod Dyson $1 for speed and Luke Scott $2 (DH) for power.

STARTING PITCHING

I wanted two high-end starters for under $20 each, and I got them in Brandon Morrow $19 and Jake Peavy $17. I was hoping for more strikeouts from my other starters, but Matt Harrison $11 and Hisashi Iwakuma $7 should be good enough supporting my Big Two. I can then backfill with my middle relievers and spot start Jose Quintana $1 and Scott Diamond $1 when the match-ups are right. I thought Ryan Dempster $10 and Tommy Hanson $8 were not great but certainly good prices.

RELIEF PITCHING

I was so happy to land two solid closers for $25 total in Joel Hanrahan $13 and Jim Johnson $12. I was also happy to back them up with some decent middle relievers in Wesley Wright $1, Phil Coke $1, and Octavio Dotel $1. I liked Grant Balfour for $9 and Jose Veras for $6 in this auction.

SUMMARY

Overall, it was a good auction for me. I believe, though perhaps a little weaker in the power area than I would have liked, I’m solid in all five hitting categories. I should win AVG with very strong R and SB. I’m not totally in love with my pitching, but again, it looks like a fairly solid AL staff to me. Time will tell…
